I am sure that most San Francisco parents now realize that neighborhood schools might be making a comeback for the Fall (or Summer rather) of 2011. This leaves me to wonder if more parents might be trading in their Priuses for their prams.
Drop off and pick up at our daughter’s school is mainly via vehicle and, as far as I can tell, we are one of only a handful of families who are able to walk to and fro daily (in all fairness, we did move into our present neighborhood once our child was accepted to the school of our choice). This may all change as next year a great majority of our new neighborhood’s 5 year-olds will be eligible to attend the school that their grandparents (or landlord’s grandparents) had commissioned to build some 45 years ago.
My next question is if more parents will attempt to take up residency in desirable school zones (al la most American districts). I met a mom at our neighborhood block party this last weekend who confessed to crashing the festivities to mearly “check out the ‘hood”. She presently lives in sunny, quaint, near-by Noe Valley, but admits that with the change in school admittance policies she and her husband are checking out our local open houses. Hum, maybe we should be browsing the local real estate as well before prices sky rocket….
If you are an SF Parent with a soon-to-be Kindergartene do you know your ”zone”? Are you happy with it? Would you move to another part of the city (or out!) to be in the zone of a higher performing school? Just curious…..
…..and we haven’t even mention private yet! ^;^
